An improved method for measuring soil microbial activity by gas phase flow injection analysis Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Doran,Gregory; Zander,Alek.
The rate of carbon dioxide production is commonly used as a measure of microbial activity in the soil. The traditional method of CO2 determination involves trapping CO2 in an alkali solution and then determining CO2 concentration indirectly by titration of the remaining alkali in the solution. This method is still commonly employed in laboratories throughout the world due to its relative simplicity and the fact that it does not require expensive, specific equipment. However, there are several drawbacks: the method is time-consuming, requires large amounts of chemicals and the consistency of results depends on the operator's skills. With this in mind, an improved method was developed to analyze CO2 captured in alkali traps, which is cheap and relatively...

Characterization of residual oils for biodiesel production Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Canesin,Edmilson Antonio; de Oliveira,Cláudio Celestino; Matsushita,Makoto; Felicidade Dias,Lucia; Reghiany Pedrão,Mayka; Evelazio de Souza,Nilson.
Background: Residual oils were characterized according to their physicochemical properties, i.e. acidity, iodine value, peroxide value and saponification number, to evaluate the degradation level and viability for biodiesel production. Results: The methyl esters of fatty acids (FAME) from samples of residual bovine, chicken and soybean oils were quantified by using four transesterification methods, using acidic and basic catalysis and, gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (GC-FID). Methods that used acidic catalysis at a lower temperature were the most efficient. Methyl biodiesel samples were synthesized by basic catalysis (KOH) for all quantified oils and the physicochemical properties of the biofuel were evaluated, i.e. viscosity, flash and...

Modeling and optimization of drying process of paddy in infrared and warm air fluidized bed dryer CIGR Journal
pourbagher, roghayeh; rohani, abbas; rahmati, Mohammad Hashem; Abbaspour-Fard, Mohammad Hossein.
This paper investigated the effect of the components of fluidized bed dryer with two thermal sources of heater and infrared such as air temperature at three levels (40, 50 and 60°C) equivalent to radiation intensity of 0.031, 0.042 and 0.053 W.cm-3 in infrared dryer, final moisture content of dried Tarom and Shirudi varieties at three levels (8-9%, 9-10% and 10-11% (d.b.)) and air velocity of 4.5 ms-1 on the milling characteristic and drying time. To this end, stepwise regression was used for selecting the best models for each dependent variable in terms of the independent variables and genetic algorithm was used for optimizing the parameters of dryer with simultaneous consideration of cracked and fractured grains, milling recovery, degree of milling and...

Organic Matter Fractions and Quality of the Surface Layer of a Constructed and Vegetated Soil After Coal Mining. I - Humic Substances and Chemical Characterization Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Leal,Otávio dos Anjos; Castilhos,Rosa Maria Vargas; Pauletto,Eloy Antonio; Pinto,Luiz Fernando Spinelli; Fernandes,Flávia Fontana; Penning,Letiane Helwig; Rosa,Carla Machado da.
After open coal mining, soils are “constructed”, which usually contain low levels and quality of organic matter (OM). Therefore, the use of plant species for revegetation and reclamation of degraded areas is essential. This study evaluated the distribution of carbon (C) in the chemical fractions as well as the chemical characteristics and humification degree of OM in a soil constructed after coal mining under cultivation of perennial grasses. The experiment was established in 2003 with the following treatments: Hemarthria altissima (T1), Paspalum notatum (T2), Cynodon dactilon (T3), Urochloa brizantha (T4), bare constructed soil (T5), and natural soil (T6). In 2009, soil samples were collected from the 0.00-0.03 m layer and the total organic carbon stock...

Surface plasmon resonance in chalcogenide glass-based optical system ArchiMer
Le Person, Jenny; Colas, Florent; Compere, Chantal; Lehaitre, Michel; Anne, M; Boussard Pledel, C; Bureau, B; Adam, J; Deputier, S; Guilloux Viry, M.
The surface plasmon resonance phenomenon has been studied in a chalcogenide glass-based optical system. IR transmission properties of these materials combined to their high refractive indices lead to advantageous properties for sensing. In this study, numerical simulations have been carried out to investigate the potentialities of sulfide glass from the GeGaSbS system as a coupling prism material. Then, an angular modulation SPR biosensor has been set up in the Kretschmann-Raether arrangement. Experimental data are consistent with numerical calculation and the detection limit of the sensor is 3 x 10(-5) RIU. These preliminary results are promising. Further investigations have to be carried out to confirm the great potentialities of those materials for...

Ultrasound spectroscopy as an alternative method to measure the physical-chemical constituents of buffalo milk Ciência Rural
Melo,Waldjânio de Oliveira; Monteiro,Bruno Moura; Chaves,Luciara Celi da Silva; Santos,Eduardo Riodades Daher; Souza,Damazio Campos de; Amorim,Bianca Souza de; Faria Junior,Sebastião Pereira de; Ribeiro Filho,José Dantas; Faturi,Cristian; Viana,Rinaldo Batista.
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to use ultrasound spectroscopy for the determination of the physical-chemical characteristics of buffalo milk and compare it to theinfrared method. Levels of fat, protein, lactose and non-fat solids (NFS) were determined in milk samples of 22 buffaloes (n = 383) with initial milk production of 6.97 ± 1.55 litres. The respective average results for the fat, protein, lactose and NFS of the individual samples were 6.31%, 3.81%, 4.99% and 9.75% for the infrared method-PO ANA 009 and 7.16%, 2.5%, 6.28% and 9.41% using ultrasound spectroscopy. There were significant differences (P<0.0001) in the levels of all of the components analysed between the two methods studied. Results obtained in the analyses using the ultrasonic milk...
